I’m in the process of doing some upgrade to our current infrastructure, part of this upgrade is also to add new services to the Azuretek Web Services roster.

Right now we only have been doing OpenVZ based VPSes with pretty good success at wtfserve.com. Recently however we’ve decided to invest a lot of time and money into bigger and better things. Right now we have a few Atom based servers that we expect to sell well. We are also migrating from OpenVZ to Xen Source as our virtualization platform.

Part of these changes include the addition of WHMCS and SolusVM so that we can more easily provision and bill our customers.

In addition to all these new services and features we’re working on a re-design of wtfserve.com as well as the launch of our new commodity web hosting service craphost.com.

I’ll be posting some guides on setting up and configuring VMWare ESXi, converting VMWare Server VMs to ESXi format, configuring a raid 5 array on an MSA20 via linux command line and hopefully some more interesting pictures.

I’ve also just bought an iphone so I’ll probably be messing around with doing updates on the go.

If you’re an American of the United States variety you may have noticed there’s an election going on, and on, and on, and on. It’s been a long standing tradition amongst our culture in this great nation to stretch out events as long as possible, if you’re not picking out presents in August you might as well end it all now because god knows your grandchildren need new socks at the ready for that special day oh so many months away.

It seems like it’s been 2 years since this Election’s campaigns started, some might even say they’ve been going on for longer, speculation of Hilary Clinton running for office was going on since before the 2000 election. I ask you though, why? Why is there this need for us to constantly be waiting for an event that ultimately means nothing?

You might be shaking your head, asking “What’s with this guy? Of course it means something, it means everything!” But does it really? When was the last time you were directly affected by a new president? You might be saying “My brother is in a foreign country because of war!” or “I’m in the poor house because our president ruined the economy!”. Well I have a secret for you, economic turns and wars happen regardless of who is in office!

We had a VERY prosperous 10 years or so during the Clinton era, what else happened during that time? The dot com boom, and what happened around 9/11? The dot com bubble burst! Several new jobs were created and just as quickly several jobs were just as quickly dissipated. Same with wars and threats, we have Vietnam, Iraq v1, Kosovo, Cuban missle crisis hell every little skirmish in the middle east ties up our military for decades. Do you think it really makes that much of a difference who is in office?

I grew up in Arizona and McCain has always been great he’s changed in his political views a lot during this campaign. Obama is a great charismatic person who has a lot of views that fall in line with my own, but how can we really know who he is? In the end what is the difference between the candidates? Race? Age? Tax plans that have a history of not being enacted and even so are different by mere fractions? It’s always going to be the same, the rich people will always be taxed more, the poor people will always want more social services.

Nothing will change and we will always progress regardless of who’s in theoretical charge. I say we vote, vote for apathy, don’t vote at all who cares in the end anyway? If you decide to vote anyway, vote for progress, progress for progress sake is better than doing nothing regardless of the outcome.

edit: Vote Stephen Baldwin

I’ve been reading a lot of back and forth between atheists and theists regarding the Atheist Bus Campaign, and I feel like the major idea behind the campaign is being lost. This isn’t about being anti-religion or pro anything, it’s about letting people know it’s ok to not have a belief in god, that you’re not evil or immoral if you don’t have a dogma.

Most people are afraid of being left out or disowned by their families and friends if they don’t at least say “I’m christian” or “I believe in Jesus”. People don’t really feel a connection but they say they do because they’re afraid, and eventually it turns into just another bad habit that they pass along to their children. You don’t need to believe in anything to feel alright with the world, or to be moral, god doesn’t make decisions for you and that’s ok.

It’s not as simple as saying “we’re in this group and you’re in that group and that group is wrong and stupid and crazy” because “our” group doesn’t exist, it’s JUST the religious group and then everyone else. We should come together in our varied beliefs/dis-beliefs/anti-beliefs and at the very least let everyone know there’s nothing wrong with being ok with no belief.

The idea that we need religion is a deeply flawed one, one could argue that religion is nothing more than attempt at controlling populations through fear and a way to start wars. We don’t have to believe the same thing, we don’t have to see eye to eye, but at the very least we should agree that being ok with not knowing isn’t bad. We should celebrate the fact that we are willing to do good just to do good, it’s up to everyone as moral people to decide to be good and religion has no place in your decision making process. Ultimately you are the decision maker and if you can’t make the right choice without a deity you need to look deep at what you want out of life and how you want to affect those around you.

Most importantly we should at least all agree that belief in anything other than rational provable facts and information should not affect the way we are governed, taught and treated.

If you’re using SLES or any other Suse variant you might be wondering why your Splunk installation is constantly in a loading loop unless you browse to it using Internet Explorer. After lots of hacking around, reboots and google searches I emailed the splunk team about my problem. At first they didn’t seem to understand my problem but they did suggest I take a look at this article in their troubleshooting documentation.

http://www.splunk.com/doc/latest/admin/UnableToGetAProperlyFormattedResponseFromTheServer

It appears that there’s some kind of mime type issue where either the input/output is munged because SUSE incorrectly identifies it. It results in a “loading dashboard…” showing up for a long time and after that.

Your search is still running after 1 minute. Unless you have set a high maxresults:: value, check if the Splunk Server is up and responding

The fix is actually quite easy, I’ll just repost it here just in case the link I provided becomes bad later.

Unable to get a properly formatted response from the server

Users running Splunk on a SuSE 10.x server may receive the error message Unable to get a properly formatted response from the server; canceling the current search when executing any kind of search.

In order to resolve this issue edit /etc/mime.types. Delete (or comment out) these 2 lines:

text/x-xsl xsl
text/x-xslt xslt xsl

Also change this line:

text/xml xml

to:

text/xml xml xsl

With these changes in place, restart Splunk and clear your browser cache.

Make sure to clear your cache, it’s actually quite easy! Just go to your firefox preferences underneath the “privacy” tag, there is a “clear now…” button.

GoonCity

This project was started by a goon (Ryan Allen) with lots of artistic talent at the SA forums, and it immediately snowballed. The idea is similar to previous projects such as the blue ball manipulator and goontower, essentially goons of all shapes and sizes put together their collective talent and made this awesome city.

After getting dugg a few times and in general slammed by tons of sites they had a problem paying their bills so I offered to help them out with their bandwidth. Here’s what it looks like since I’ve started helping, it’s declining but I’d love to see it hit the front pages yet again.
